Today is 5 June 2018, World Environment Day, celebrated with a different theme on the same day every year. This year’s topic is Plastic Pollution.
With 400-1000 years of degradation time in nature, plastic is one of today’s most crucial waste topics. Considering 31 million tonnes of waste is produced every year in Turkey, with packaging waste making up 20% of this amount, responsibility about this subject falls on all of our shoulders.
If we were to summarize what we can do:
Following the 3R Principle (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), we can reduce plastic waste amount that we generate in our daily lives and help preserve the environment. We can choose to use paper or fabric shopping bags instead of plastic ones, minimize the plastic materials we use and in turn reduce the waste amount, segregate the plastic waste we generate and send them to relevant waste collection points.
