
Istanbul has been selected as the European Capital of Culture for the year of 2010. Since 1985, it has been seen that each city that has been selected as the European Capital of Culture by The European Union to represent the culture and soul of Europe, has used this title for different purposes and opportunities.
With the law dated 2 November 2007, numbered 5706, named “2010 – Istanbul European Capital of Culture”, an agency with the name of “Istanbul 2010 Avrupa Kültür Başkenti Ajansı” had been founded and following the foundation of the agency, the organisational works had been completed by March, 2008, by the establishment of the Coordination Committee, the Information Committee, the Executive Committee and the General Secretariat. Within the framework of the mission defined as the preparation of the city of Istanbul for the title of “European Capital of Culture for the year of 2010”, the planning and programming of the events to take place till the end of 2010 and the coordination of the works to be held by the public and civilian associations and organisations for this purpose, the “Istanbul 2010 Avrupa Kültür Başkenti Ajansı” has been carrying out its activities in three major fields, namely the applications for cities, culture and art and tourism and introduction.
The title that has been conferred to the city of Istanbul, is expected to contribute to the development of the manner and understanding of living in a capital city and the most important of all is going to lead the familiarity to the contemporary management systems by the new national and international partnerships and collaborations that are going to be established. At the same time it will offer a widespread possibility of sharing of culture and art to the citizens of Istanbul.
