ENKA is currently working on the Shotton Paper Mill Project for Shotton Mill Limited, which is owned by Modern Karton/EREN Holding, one of the industry’s biggest producers of paper, cardboard, and corrugated packaging products. Situated in Deeside in Flintshire, North Wales, the project consists of engineering (design work), procurement, and construction activities.
The site will be repurposed from producing newsprint to producing containerboard and tissue paper as a result of the conversion project. A new containerboard factory, comprising a new paper mill, warehouse and dispatch area, chemical (Starch) building, combined heat and power (CHP) building, effluent treatment plant (ETP), and old corrugated containerboard stock preparation (OCC), is being built as part of Phase 1 of the project activities. Key features of the project’s progress include:
- Approximately 1,800,000 person-hours and 706 days have been completed by the end of September 2024.
- Every work activity is subject to routine quality audits conducted in compliance with the Project Quality Plan.
- Engineering works are currently in progress.
- Subcontractors were mobilized to the site to perform earthworks, piling, pile breaking, reinforced concrete, precast concrete, structural steel and façade & roof cladding works.
- Process tanks installations have been commenced.
- About 62,500 m3 of concrete have been poured in total. High level works for Paper Machine (PM) Building are in progress. The progress of Reinforced Concrete works is 99% at the CHP Building and 25% at the ETP Building.
- The progress of precast concrete works is completed at the PM Building.
- The progress of structural steel works is 92% at the PM Building, 29% at warehouse and dispatch area, 66% at chemical (Starch) building.
- The progress of façade & roof cladding works is 40% at the PM building.
With ENKA’s enduring commitment to quality, safety, and sustainability across all projects, we are dedicated to completing this significant project on schedule and to the highest standards.
