
ENKA is carrying out the Shotton Paper Mill Project, consisting of engineering (design work), procurement and construction activities, at the Dee Estuary in Flintshire, North Wales, for Shotton Mill Limited, owned by Modern Karton/EREN Holding, one of the largest producers of paper, cardboard and corrugated packaging products in the sector.
The conversion project will transform the site from paper production to cardboard, corrugated packaging and tissue paper production. In Phase 1 of the project activities, a new cardboard factory is being constructed, including a new paper mill, warehouse and dispatch area, combined heat and power (CHP) building and effluent treatment plant (ETP).
The highlights of the progress made on the project are as follows:
- As of the end of Oct 2023, 370 days and approximately 265,000 person-hours were achieved.
- Quality audits are carried out regularly for work activities in accordance with the Project Quality Plan.
- A progress rate of 76% has been achieved in engineering works.
- Subcontractors mobilized to the site for excavation, piling, pile breaking, reinforced concrete and precast.
- Steel structure fabrication works are ongoing.
- Facade and roof cladding samples exhibited.
- Preparations for the architectural works, building MEP, Process MEI and Tank works packages bidding is ongoing.
- Progress of excavation works stands at 97%.
- The completion rate for pile driving works amounted to 95%.
- The total poured concrete is around 20.000 m3.
