General Motors New Car Assembly Plant

General Motors Assembly Plant, located in St. Petersburg’s Sushary Region, is an investment with a production capacity of 98,000 cars per year with 3 full time shifts. The plant was constructed on the industrial zone of Sushary Region on a Greenfield basis. The construction of the facility was initiated in May 2007, completed in 17 months and handed over in September 2008.

The Plant in St. Petersburg produces Chevrolet Captiva SUVs and a new generation of compact cars. Production started in November of 2008. The plant operates according to General Motors’ global manufacturing system to ensure the highest levels of quality.

Every stage of the project development, design and construction took place in close collaboration with the St. Petersburg city authorities who provided support to ENKA. The initial design of the Plant was carried out by General Motors engineering division but the entire detailed design was completed by ENKA.

The plant is constructed on a 391,000 m2plot of land and has a covered area of 72,000 m2. The plant has four major process shops, mainly paint shop, body shop, general assembly and central utility shop and a 2,800 madministration building. Due to the high ground water elevation, the plant rests on concrete driven piles, pile caps acting as column footings. The roof consists of a 24 m x 24 m structural steel truss system supported by prefabricated columns.

The major work items of the project were 198,000 m3 of excavation, 69,000 m of driven piles, 31,000 m3 of concrete, 4,700 tons of rebar steel, 2,400 tons of structural steel, 56,000 m2 of roofing, 32,000 m2 of wall cladding, 56,000 m2 of ground-slab hardening, 9,000 m of infrastructure piping, 125,000 m of cabling, 83,000 m2 of landscaping and 45,000 m2 of roads and parking areas.

The complete electrical and mechanical utility system and heating, ventilation and air conditioning system were also installed, together with a large-scale building automation system.
