INFRASTRUCTURE

An efficient infrastructure network is the cornerstone of the global economy. Competitive transportation services operated securely and sustainability are essential for the growth and development of countries.

Motorways are a vital element of all transportation networks since they connect all other transportation means, i.e. railways, airports and ports, to each other. Therefore, the efficiency of the whole transportation system is only possible through the establishment of coordinated infrastructure grids.

ENKA’s Infrastructure Business Line delivers landmark projects that foster sustainable progress, socio-economic growth and means of safe travel for its clients and communities. ENKA’s involvement in motorway, bridge and tunnel projects began in 1958. In the 1970s, ENKA participated in the establishment of Türkiye’s infrastructure network with the construction of the Anatolian Highway.

In 1980s, ENKA and its partner Bechtel built the Gerede-Ankara Motorway, which consists of 2×3 lanes across 230 kilometers. This motorway system was crucial for Türkiye, as it links İstanbul, Türkiye’s European port, and Ankara, its capital and Asian depot. After completing the Gerede-Ankara Motorway Project, ENKA, in partnership with Bechtel, proceeded to develop new highways across Croatia, Romania, Albania, Kosovo, Serbia, and North Macedonia, contributing to economic growth and promoting tourism in Eastern Europe.

In addition to these projects, ENKA was also involved in the construction of the Osmangazi Suspension Bridge in Türkiye. The bridge is the fourth longest suspension bridge in the world by central span length with a total weight of 52,000 tons, a main span of 1,550 m and a total length of 2,682 m, constructed between Dilovasi Dil Burnu of the Izmit Bay and the Herzegovina Cape of Altinova in the Gulf of Izmit as part of Highway 5.

ENKA’s subsidiary Çimtaş Steel, as a subcontractor of the Japanese company IHI, carried out the detailed engineering, procurement and fabrication of the tower panels, block formation, trial assembly and shipment to the final assembly site, as well as the detailed engineering, procurement and fabrication of the deck panels of the Osmangazi Bridge. The formation, trial assembly and loading of the deck blocks for sea transportation was completed by Çimtaş Shipyard, also a subsidiary of ENKA. ENKA’s other subsidiary, Kasktaş, carried out work on the Osmangazi Bridge Project in four different sections: diaphragm wall works for the South Anchorage Block and South Approach Viaducts, dry dock sheet piling works and jet grouting works for the North Side Span Pier soil improvement.

ENKA was involved in another important project that is the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge. ENKA subsidiary Çimtaş fabricated 43,500 tons of steel towers, 53,000 tons of steel decks, 2,500 tons of steel shafts, 900 tons of anchor blocks, 200 tons of scaffolding bollards and eyebolts, totaling 100,100 tons of steel for this project. The steel tower blocks were delivered to the erection site by the GMK-1, a dynamic positioning special service vessel specially designed and built by Çimtaş for the previous bridge project, the Osmangazi Bridge. ENKA subsidiary Kasktaş also took part in this project and successfully completed the Asian Anchor Block, European Anchor Block and European soil improvement works.

ENKA has built and continues to build highways, motorways, bridges, tunnels, overpasses and relevant civil works and structures and the total length of projects undertaken over 65 years is almost 1,000 kilometers.
